The Garden

Upon passing through the monumental baroque wrought iron gate, visitors enter the main courtyard of the Grand Château d'Ansembourg, built in the 17th century. The gardens were landscaped in the 1730s-1750s by Count Lambert-Joseph de Marchant and d'Ansembourg. Although the site was nearly in ruins by the 1980s, restoration efforts have been ongoing since 1987. Today, the terraced gardens, ponds, fountains, monumental staircases, groves, collections of espalier fruit trees, labyrinth, and vegetable garden evoke the opulence of yesteryears. An 18th-century yew tree tunnel stretching 200 meters lines the Eisch river. A majestic bicentennial plane tree near the vegetable garden is likely the oldest specimen in the country.

Since the 19th century, the gardens have been renowned beyond the borders of the Grand Duchy for their collection of useful plants, including nearly 400 fruit species. Although much of the assortment disappeared, many 18th-century stone sculptures are preserved. Under the arcades of the castle's rear facade, four lime-washed statues represent the continents of origin for the estate's ancient botanical rarities.

The rose garden was established in 2015 on the second terrace, mirroring the geometric language of the labyrinth below in the arabesques of the rose beds. It features a collection of Luxembourgish and European roses, which grows richer each year. The grass alley flanking the rose beds is lined with 'Walferdange' roses (LENS ROSES). In 2017, on the International Day of Peace, an elegant hybrid tea rose with large ivory-white flowers was christened 'Jardins d'Ansembourg'.
