Recovering Biodiversity
In the picturesque forest area near the "G. V. Schiaparelli" Astronomical Observatory in Varese, Italy, a significant biodiversity recovery project is underway. This initiative began in 2019 as a collaboration between Coeur Vert and the observatory. Despite a hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the project recently resumed with new vigor and a clear focus on restoring and preserving local biodiversity.
The Project's Revival
Initially, the project saw approximately 300 trees planted with the help of various youth organizations. However, the pandemic halted further activities until recently. With pandemic restrictions easing, we organized a second, smaller activity, inviting young volunteers from nearby centers. This time, about 130 trees were planted, and essential maintenance work was carried out on the paths.

Current Focus:

The project's primary aim is to rehabilitate a forest area that suffered due to inappropriate human intervention. In the 1920s, spruces were planted for their aesthetic appeal, but these trees were not suited to the local altitude and soil conditions. Over time, their shallow roots, unable to anchor them firmly, led to widespread tree falls during violent storms, which also triggered wildfires.
Now, with the immediate damage from wildfires and storms addressed, our focus has shifted to experimenting with plant species resilient to climate change. Our goal is to transform this degraded forest into a "biodiversity oasis," reintroducing indigenous plant species and creating diverse natural habitats, including meadows and ponds.
Work Done
To maximize efficiency, we divided into groups. Around a hundred seedlings were planted; some were placed permanently, while others were set in an "open-air nursery" for future planting. One group also carried out maintenance and safety work on the paths.

Future Developments
The project managers expressed great satisfaction with our involvement and are optimistic about continuing our collaboration. They proposed that Fondation Coeur Vert might join a provincial action plan for reforestation, which would enhance our recognition as a key player in environmental restoration in the region. To discuss this potential collaboration in detail, we have been invited to organize a meeting.
Conclusion:

The Italy Biodiversity Recovery Project is a beacon of hope for restoring natural habitats and biodiversity in Varese. By leveraging the collective efforts of dedicated volunteers and partnering organizations, we aim to create a sustainable and thriving environment that can withstand the challenges posed by climate change. This initiative not only restores the natural beauty of the area but also serves as an educational and community-building endeavor, fostering a deep connection between people and nature.
