Reforestation after arson
in Tiriolo national park
The reforestation project in the municipality of Tirolo, Calabria, Italy, brought together over twenty young volunteers from Italy, Slovenia, and Poland, along with the "Red Devils" group of civil defense volunteers and members of Schola Occurrences.
A video documenting the activity was screened during the 27th Christmas Concert at the Vatican's Paolo VI Hall and broadcast on prime-time Italian national television networks.
The Activity
Held in Tiriolo (CZ) from February 20th to 24th, 2019, the project aimed to reforest a vast area in response to the annual incidence of arson, perpetrated by individuals seeking to expand agricultural territories through dishonest means.
An International Effort
The project also involved the Mayor and municipal council. Partnering with universities and schools in Poland, UMG Magna Graecia, local secondary schools, cultural and volunteer associations, the district institute of Catanzaro, the municipal library, and the parish, the initiative also engaged students from the Tyrolean community and inmates undergoing social reintegration and restorative justice programs.
